    Summary for Lesson 4:

    What did we cover
    – Discussed our first impressions of the book
    – Did a character study (using illustrations of characters from the book)
    – Worked through the questions for the first third of DCW

    Class report
The students were very excited to get started on our next book, Danny the Champion of the World. We began the lesson by sharing our first impressions of the book and then did a character study before moving onto the questions.
It was great to hear what the students thought about the book; many of the students remarked on how there were sad or scary elements to the book, which marked it out as different from the others. We discussed the importance of conflict in stories, which the students found very
    intriguing.
Next, we did a character study using illustrations from the book. The students were particularly good when it came to noticing the significance of objects in the pictures or the
background. I was also impressed by how they inferred details about character relationships.
We then moved onto the VIPERS. The students gave some wonderful answers. Both the students and I have particularly enjoyed tackling the questions which require longer debates.
It is always incredibly interesting to hear their thoughts and opinions on different matters, and it is great to see them build off the answers given by their fellow students.
We finished the lesson by discussing whether we thought Danny was right to go looking for his dad; the students gave some really well formed answers and it was great to hear all of their different opinions.
It was great to see the excitement of the students when I assigned them their homework; I have certainly noticed an increase in the quality of the work the students have been
producing, so I am very much looking forward to reading the work they submit for this book.

    Homework for Lesson 4:

Imagine you are Danny. Write a diary entry from the day you found out about your dad’s secret.
    OR
Do you like Danny’s father? Explain why

    Summary for Lesson 3:

    What did we cover
    – Recapped what we did last lesson
    – Came up with our own chocolate creations
    – Worked through the questions for the final third of CCF
    Class report
We began the lesson by recapping what we did in the sessions last week and going over what
has happened in CCF so far.
Next, we moved on to coming up with our own ideas for a Wonka-style candy. Some of the students had really fun ideas and it was wonderful to hear them share their creations with
such enthusiasm. I was particularly impressed by several students who managed to think very well on their feet.
We then looked at the final lot of VIPERS for the last 10 chapters. The students gave some excellent answers and engaged really well in the ‘bigger’ questions which we addressed.
One question which proved especially interesting was ‘do you feel sorry for the other children’? The sophistication and variety of answers given was wonderful, and it is great to
see the students continuing to grow in confidence.
This lesson was our final session on CCF and we will be moving onto Danny the Champion of the World on Thursday. I was very pleased with how well the students coped with this
step-up, as these books are far longer and more challenging than those we have studied previously. I am looking forward to seeing how they continue to progress as we work through
    the next, similarly difficult, texts.

    Homework for Lesson 3:

Using the characters of Augustus, Mike, Veruca and Violet as inspiration, come up with another
nasty child and write an introduction to their character.
    OR
What was your favourite part of the story? Why?

    Summary for lesson 2

    What did we cover
    – Recapped what we did last lesson
    – Did a character study (using picture of characters from the film)
    – Worked through the questions for the second third of CCF
    – Discussed whether Mr Wonka is trustworthy

    Class report
We began the lesson by reflecting on what we covered in the lesson on Monday; it was great to hear the students describe why we did the tasks we did (i.e. doing the character studies to learn how to infer details) as it shows that they understand the purpose of our work.
Next, we moved on to looking at some images of characters from the film version of CCF. It was wonderful to hear the students compare and contrast these images to those in the book, and they all had a really keen eye for detail. I was also impressed by how aware they were of the way that posters/book covers can intrigue an audience/reader as well as what it can tell you about the characters it portrays.
Next, we moved onto the VIPERS for the second third of the book. The students really enjoyed discussing this section of CCF which is so lovely to see. They provided some
excellent answers, as always, and continued to demonstrate their progress by explaining their answers in detail and referring to other parts of the book to support their answers.
We finished by having a discussion about what we think of Willy Wonka’s character: would you trust him? It was fascinating to hear the different opinions of the students, and I very much look forward to continuing and building on this discussion in our final lesson on the book next week.

    Homework for lesson 2 :

Design your own Willy Wonka creation! Write about what ingredients go into it, how it is made,

and what is special about it.
    OR
Do you think Mr. Wonka is a good man? Explain your answer.

    Summary for Lesson 1:

    What did we cover
    – Discussed the plan for the next 5 books
    – Shared initial thoughts on CCF
    – Did a character study (using illustrations of characters from the book)
    – Worked through the questions for the first third of CCF
    Class report
It was so lovely to rejoin the students after our short break and begin work on the next 5
books. The lesson began with a brief explanation of how the lessons will work (i.e. there being
3 rather than 2 lessons per book) and a discussion of how these books are different to those
we did before (i.e. they are much longer).
We next shared some initial thoughts about CCF ; many of the students had read the whole
book already, which is great, and they all shared at least one aspect of the story which they
    really enjoyed.
As with all our books, we began with a character study using illustrations from the text. The
students were wonderful at this exercise, and some even inferred details which I myself had
    not noticed right away!
Next, we moved onto the VIPERS. The students were all brilliantly engaged and I noticed a
real step-up in the number of hands going up to answer questions. The answers the students
are given continue to improve; they add more explanation and often supply some great
references to other areas in the text.
This first lesson back has been a hugely promising start; I am very hopeful that over the next
few months they will continue to get better and better at their analysis and grouping-sharing,
which is an incredibly exciting prospect considering how competent they are already.
